With 368 beds and an 82-bed nursing home,  Ellis Hospital is an invaluable health care resource for our region,  providing the community with access to a broad array of vital health care services 24 hours a day,  seven days a week,  365 days a year.  There are numerous nursing opportunities available in the following units:

Orthopedics-General Surgery-Pediatrics

A3 is a 32-bed unit designed to care for adults,  adolescents and children,  primarily after orthopedic or general surgery.

Medical-Cardiology

A4 is a 32-bed medical unit designed to care primarily for patients who require cardiac monitoring, including those undergoing invasive diagnostic testing and interventional therapies,  and patients scheduled to have coronary artery bypass procedures.

Cardiothoracic-Vascular-Pulmonary

A5 is a 26-bed medical/surgical unit and a six-bed,  step-down unit.  It is designed to accommodate patients undergoing cardiac,  thoracic,  and vascular surgery,  as well as those who have advanced pulmonary disease.  The step-down unit provides a higher level of care for patients who have complex post-operative and medical needs.

Oncology-Hospice-Medical/Surgical

A6 is a 32-bed medical unit that focuses on the care of patients with oncological disease processes, including those requiring intensive chemotherapy regimens.  Hospice patients on this unit need higher skilled services,  particularly for those patients who require more intensive pain management.

Short Stay Unit

B2 is a 15-bed outpatient unit designed for the short stay patient requiring anywhere from a two hour to three day stay.  The unit includes a three room procedure area equipped for conscious sedation and minor procedures.

Transitional Care

C5 is a 25-bed unit designed to care for patients that are transitioning to a discharge home,  waiting for long-term car arrangements to be made,  and stable Hospice patients.  The key focus of this unit includes discharge planning,  patient and family education,  palliative measures and restorative care.

Emergency Department

The Golub Center for Emergency Services at Ellis Hospital is a Level II trauma emergency department that provides an array of services,  including,  but not limited to,  the evaluation and stabilization of illness and trauma,  and the diagnosis and treatment of patients with urgent and chronic medical, surgical,  dental and emotional needs.

Specialty and tertiary services include  -  Level II trauma,  cardiac,  vascular and thoracic medicine,  hematology and toxicology,  neurology,  gastroenterology,  endocrinology,  orthopedic medicine,  ophthalmology,  gynecology,  pediatrics and psychiatric crisis intervention.

Neurology

C4 is comprised of two units:  a 17-bed neurological unit designed to primarily care for adults with neurological disease processes requiring medical and/or surgical intervention;  and an 8-bed neurological constant care unit designed to provide critical care to patients with significant neurological disease and/or those who have had surgery.  The neurological constant care unit will be part of the new two-story ICU being built at Ellis.  Ellis Hospital is also home to a nationally-recognized comprehensive Stroke Center.

Intensive Care Unit

The current ICU,  which is located on C6,  is a 20-bed intensive care unit designed to provide care to adults who are critically ill,  including:  patients in shock who require hemodynamic monitoring; vascular,  thoracic and cardiac surgery patients;  and patients with acute respiratory disease processes who require mechanical ventilation.

In 2005,  Ellis will begin construction on a new two-story,  26-bed ICU which will be located in front of the hospital,  next to the main A-wing.  The new ICU will bring critically ill patients closer to key services such as radiology,  operating suites,  the emergency department and the cardiac catheterization laboratory.

Bruggeman Center for Diagnosis and Treatment

The Bruggeman Center has five procedure rooms and an 11-bed recovery area that serves patients requiring gastrointestinal and pulmonary procedures.  It also has an outpatient clinic designed to serve patients with orthopedic,  neurological,  infectious disease and ophthalmological focus.

Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry

C2 and C3 are each 17-bed units that provide mental health services to adults who require safe,  secure and therapeutic environment.  B3 is a 16-bed unit that offers mental health services to adolescents ranging in age from 11 to 18 who require a safe,  secure and therapeutic environment.  It is the only unit of its kind at a non-profit community hospital in Northeastern New York.

Surgical Services

The Surgical Services Department,  as it relates to nursing opportunities,  consists of four separate,  but overlapping units that provide specialized surgical services – Pre-admission Testing,  Day Surgery,  Post-Anesthesia Care,  and Surgical Suite.

Surgical services are available 24 hours a day and nurses provide pre-operative,  intra-operative and post-operative care to patients who require surgical intervention under general,  regional,  local and/or monitored anesthesia.  Patient flow is critical to the efficiency,  utilization and timeliness of these areas.

  • Pre-admission Testing is located on the second floor adjacent to the B2 Short Stay Unit.  Patients scheduled for surgery are seen by a registered nurse for assessment and patient teaching prior to the day of surgery.
  • The Day Surgery Unit on A2 is a 10-bed unit designed for the recovery of patients after surgery and the induction of general or other forms of anesthesia.  All registered nurses who work in this area must have BLS certification and be ACLS prepared.
  • The Post Anesthesia Care Unit on A2 is a 10-bed unit designed for the recovery of patients after surgery and the induction of general or other forms of anesthesia.  All registered nurses who work in this area must have BLS certification and be ACLS prepared.
  • Surgical Suite on A2 has 10-operating rooms,  two of which are dedicated to cardiac surgery.  A team of nurses,  physicians,   anesthesiologists,  certified nurse anesthetists,  physician assistants,  technicians and other support staff provide surgical services 24 hours a day.
